BGI Brand System
Brand and visual identity for an AGI research ecosystem and its inaugural hackathon - the thread identity, a two-layer colour architecture, typography, and an organic made-to-order shop. Agents that hold the thread.
BGI Nexus is a coordination space within the AGI research world - a place where builders, researchers, and communities meet around beneficial general intelligence. The colour system came first: a restrained, intentional palette designed around the architecture it serves - distributed nodes, no single authority, coordination over control.
Then came the inaugural BGI Sprint, and with it the identity. Gap 01 of the Sprint is literally "Hold the Thread" - continuity across time, sessions, and context. So the identity is the thread: it begins as clean geometry at a single node, turns organic as it travels, and runs off the edge of every surface it touches.
It is beautiful but unmistakably incomplete - the visual language of building toward an AGI we have not reached yet. You never quite see where the thread ends. That open edge is an invitation: builders, researchers, philosophers, designers - come finish it.
"One node. One thread. One signal colour. Everything else is space."BGI Sprint brand system v0.1
The node, and what leaves it
Three rules make the mark. Origin: a single solid node - the fixed point everything holds to, never more than one. Travel: the thread, fine stroke with rounded caps in Nexus Teal, an arc that degrades into a hand-drawn line. Escape: the thread must cross a boundary of its frame, never tidily resolved inside.
From one rule comes a generative grammar - arc, loop, descend, branch - structured at origin, organic in travel, escaping at the edge. A system anyone on the team can extend.
The naming holds the same discipline: BGI Sprint is the primary name, matched across the announcement deck, site, merch, and registration. Hypersprint stays in reserve - the durable series name if the event ever decouples. And the number is the brand: 01 is the origin node the whole series departs from.
Four colours. Everything else is space.
Four colours, and everything else is space. BGI Indigo anchors the system - between blue (trust) and violet (wisdom), the colour of things that last. The palette is designed around decentralised architecture itself: indigo is the shared field all nodes operate within, teal marks the moment two nodes find each other, the near-black ground is the latent space between, and signal white is the attestation - a loop closed, truth recorded.
The rule that holds it together: teal is the only element allowed to feel alive.
Three cuts. One voice.
DM Serif Display for headings - classical elegance, modern restraint, italic for warmth. DM Sans Light for the body. JetBrains Mono for the system layer of an ecosystem where bot commands and attestation data are part of daily language. The verbal register follows the visual one: exact, not loud.
Three principles govern everything. Restrained by design: four colours, three type cuts, one mark - decoration is the absence of conviction. Beautiful, not finished: the open edge is the message; we build toward an AGI we have not reached, and the work shows it. Trustworthy, built to last: hopeful rigour, and organic low-waste materials wherever the brand touches the physical world.
Spend the thread
The shop is where the brand meets the physical world - and where the studio's scope runs end to end: materials, decoration method, placement, and the storefront itself. Builders redeem the brand rather than receiving prizes - the reward system is the brand, designed to the same restraint as everything else.
Organic by default
Certified organic cotton canvas, twill, and fleece - GOTS, OCS, and GRS certified lines, from makers who give 1% of sales to the planet.
The thread, stitched
The mark is literally a thread, so where it counts it is real embroidery, not print. The motif becomes the method: raised, tactile, built to outlast a screen print.
Made to order
Printed and stitched on demand. Nothing is produced until it is wanted - no overstock, no landfill run.
Beneficial, down to the thread. Beneficial general intelligence, beneficial goods - the B in BGI does not stop at the software.
Sprint 01 - the origin node
The system's first full deployment: the inaugural BGI Sprint, June 2026, which I helped lead with the BGI team. I led the Sprint's brand, merch, and shop workstreams - the announcement deck system, Canva-ready asset kits and font packages for the wider team, event communications, and the made-to-order shop with its tiered gift card structure.
The Sprint also connects this work to the studio's product practice: Utsa / OfferNet, the coordination layer presented within the same ecosystem, shares the Sprint's stage - brand and product as one continuous design argument. Every thread starts with a point. This is the point; everything that follows departs from here.
