Field Notes

Notes made from inside the conditions: aboard boats, on building sites, in small rooms, and wherever weather, movement, maintenance, and use refuse to remain abstract.

01At sea · aboard a catamaran

The deep blue water turning to black grey.

A vivid orange sun sinking into the ocean horizon at sunset, seen from the boat.
Sunset at sea, Bahamas.

Feels like I have been on this boat forever. Learning to live with the waves, and the sounds crashing. Cooking in a moving catamaran is a balancing act, and so is walking. My sense of time is different now, and so is my sleep: I wake in the middle of the night for helm watch, then sit and watch the deep blue water turn to black grey.

Sunrise and sunset are always magical. Every day dolphins appear, and groups of flying fish, they actually fly, with wings, gliding over the water. When it gets rough out here, I remember how lucky I am to even be here, this close to the ocean and this intimate with it.

They show up almost every day.
Sunrise over the ocean seen through the angled window of the catamaran.
Sunrise, framed by the boat.
Cooking a curry at the galley stove as sunset light streams through the boat windows.
Dinner, a balancing act, at sunset.
Sun rays bursting from behind a cloud over open water.
Light doing something new every hour.
02Living with movement

When the floor moves.

On the boat, cooking starts with the body: one hip against the counter, one hand free, knives put down before a wave arrives. Drawers need latches. Hot pans need somewhere to land. A room can be generous and still fail if there is nothing to brace against.

Movement makes sequence visible. What can be reached, what can fall, and what must be secured become part of the plan.

03Compact space

Everything needs a place.

In a cabin, an object without a home moves into the walkway, the bed, or the work surface. Storage is not added after the room is designed; it is what keeps the room available for more than one use.

The same square metre has to become kitchen, table, desk, and passage without requiring a full reset each time.

04Infrastructure

The systems are never background.

Fresh water, battery charge, ventilation, bilge pumps, diesel lines, and access panels shape daily life as directly as windows and furniture. When one system fails, the room changes.

Maintenance needs space, light, access, and a person who can understand what they are looking at. Concealment is not the same as resolution.
